General Information

Newcastle upon Tyne is a port city located in the North East region of England, United Kingdom and owes its name to a Norman castle founded in 1080 by Robert Curthose, the eldest son of William the Conqueror.

From the Middle Ages, the city thrived as a coal mining and exporting centre. During the 19th century the city was known for its engineering and steel production and later became the world's foremost shipyard. Since then the city's industrial base has declined and today the city has a lively and diverse atmosphere filled with many shops, pubs and various authentic restaurants from cultures around the world.

Newcastle is known for its nightlife, art and sports. Newcastle's football club, Newcastle United, has been based at St James' Park since the club was established in 1892.
