Birmingham
General Information
Birmingham is located in the West Midlands region of England, United Kingdom and is affectionately known as "Brum" to the locals.
Birmingham is a diverse and vibrant city which has grown from a major centre of the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century, to the metropolitan city of today, after massive regeneration projects.
The city's economy is dominated by the service sector and is an important hub for transport, retail, events and conferences. With the six universities within the city, Birmingham is the largest centre of higher education in the country other than London.
Showing the tell-tale signs of the destruction that World War II caused, and bad town planning leaves a lot of concrete structures and ring roads, however Birmingham has done well to revive the city and today tourists will be enthralled with all that Birmingham has to offer.
Birmingham's wide-spread canal system is now used mainly for leisure boating and the former warehouses have been converted into museums and galleries.
