General Information

Liverpool is situated in the North West region of England, United Kingdom and is a vibrant city with a great cultural history located in the Liverpool Bay of the Irish Sea. It was awarded the European Capital of Culture in 2008 and the Pier Head Waterfront has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2004.

The first docks opened in the early 18th century and Liverpool's first ocean going steamer left there in 1840. Today Liverpool port handles greater volumes of cargo than ever before.

World famous music groups including the Beatles, reign from Liverpool and many people still visit to pay homage to them. The city is also known for the Liverpool Philharmonic orchestra, its universities and its football teams - Liverpool and Everton.

There are two grand cathedrals which dominate the city and worth a visit. Every year, the famous Grand National Horse Race takes place just outside Liverpool, in Aintree.

Tourism is a significant part of today's economy for Liverpool and is aided by the city having its own international airport. Liverpool celebrated its 800th anniversary in 2007.
